According to a criminal complaint, James Johnson is facing several charges including first degree reckless homicide, neglecting a child - consequence is death and two counts of physical abuse of a child.
Court documents state authorities were called to a home shortly after 7 p.m. on January 1 for a report of an unresponsive 1-year-old.
Once on scene, police noticed the child had bruising to his head and face. The mother of the child, Andreana Martin, told police her now ex-boyfriend was watching her son while she was at work.
While Martin was at work, she got a call from Johnson telling her the child had fallen off the bed. Once Martin got home, she realized her son was unresponsive and cold to the touch. Court documents state she then yelled for her family to call 911.
According to an autopsy, the child endured severe physical trauma including bite marks, a possible pelvis fracture and bruising.
"It kills me. I don't have words for it," said Alonzo Lamar, the father of Alonzo Lamar Jr.
In an interview with authorities on January 2, Johnson admitted to becoming frustrated with the child because he was crying. Johnson says he hit the child several times.
"You just gotta watch your kids close and watch who you have around them and protect them with all you can," said Lamar.
If convicted, Johnson faces more than 90 years in prison.
