Milwaukee Brewers 1 win away from George Webb burger giveaway

CBS 58

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- People all over Milwaukee are already salivating over the prospect of a free hamburger, but it all depends on the fate of the Milwaukee Brewers.

The team is on the verge of triggering George Webb Restaurants’ "12 in a Row" free burger tradition after winning 11 straight games. A victory over Pittsburgh on Wednesday, Aug. 13, would mark the franchise’s third time reaching the milestone.

The promotion began informally in the 1940s and became official in 1965 when the prediction was painted on restaurant walls. The giveaway has only occurred twice: in 1987, when George Webb served nearly 170,000 burgers, and in 2018, when about 90,000 were distributed.

If Milwaukee wins, George Webb will announce the date and time of the giveaway Thursday, Aug. 14 at noon.

The deciding game against the Pittsburgh Pirates kicks off at American Family Field on Wednesday at 1:10 p.m.
