Milwaukee leaders discuss nationwide trend of 'teen takeovers'
Glendale PD MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- What are some of the options available for kids in Milwaukee?
These are the questions city leaders are asking after a discussion on "teen takeovers" at Friday morning's Public Safety and Health Committee meeting.
Over the last month, incidents of teens gathering in large numbers at parks and malls have increased.
Those gatherings, referred to as “teen takeovers” on social media, have often ended in fights, and sometimes, gunfire.
In Glendale, at least 13 people were arrested Sunday at Bayshore Mall.
Police also arrested a teen at Moody Park after shots were fired.
Milwaukee police say it’s a nationwide trend, and that many of the kids were there to have fun before things took a turn.
"A lot of the teens were there to have fun," said Sheronda Grant, Milwaukee Police Department (MPD). "I was advised that a lot of the youth there were walking dogs, on roller skates, playing basketball, actually there to have fun at the park, where they should be allowed to be kids and partake in those activities.”
Leaders say they want parents to know where their kids are at all times.
MPD says at these takeovers, the Office of Community Wellness and Safety, 411Life, and other organizations were there to provide resources to kids and help disperse any arguments.
