MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport has launched a free American Sign Language interpreting service, making it the first location in Wisconsin to offer access to Aira ASL, the airport announced Monday, April 27.

The app allows travelers to connect with a professional interpreter on demand using a mobile device's camera and microphone, covering everything from baggage check to flight status to ordering food in the terminal.

Airport Director Brian Dranzik said, "At MKE, we’re always on the lookout for the latest technology to make travel more accessible and welcoming for everyone. This addition ensures that all our travelers have the support they need for a smooth and enjoyable experience."

The service is available 24/7 at no cost to both Deaf and hearing users on airport property and requires no reservation. It can be downloaded from the iOS App Store, Google Play or as a desktop app.

MKE first partnered with Aira in 2018 to offer a visual interpreting app for travelers who are blind or have low vision.
