New ordinance could shut down food trucks on Water Street by 10 p.m.
CBS 58 MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- A proposed City of Milwaukee ordinance would limit when food trucks could operate on Water Street.
Under the new ordinance that was proposed Friday morning, April 10, by Alderman Bob Bauman - food trucks on Water Street would have to stop operating at 10 p.m., closing down shop three hours earlier.
“Basically, in response to MSOE who are here today. Milwaukee School of Engineering who has a major presence in the area on the east side of the river and in response to the concerns we’ve heard expressed by the Milwaukee Police Department,” said Ald. Bauman.
It’s an ordinance that hopes to reign in the crowd.
At a Public Safety and Health Committee Friday morning, Ald. Bauman introduced an ordinance that would limit how long food trucks could operate on Milwaukee's Water Street. Food trucks would have to cease operations at 10 p.m. instead of their current 1 a.m. time.
Bauman says that would help limit some of the loitering, tailgating, and disorder in that area during bar close time. At the meeting, a representative from the Milwaukee School of Engineering testified as well, stating nearly 300 MSOE students live on Water Street.
An MSOE Board of Regents member pointed to a shooting last month where one person died and two others were injured.
The shooting happened near MSOE on N. Water and E. Knapp around 1 a.m. At the time of the shooting, there were four food trucks parked in that location.
“Now the food trucks are not the problem, it's the crowds that gather around them, especially late at night. These, the crowds do not patronize the restaurants, they’re there to hang out,” said Kendall Breunig, a member of the MSOE Board of Regents
The ordinance passed by a four to one vote and will now head to the full common council.
