Racine Zoo welcomes new residents: 3 Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep
RACINE, Wis. (CBS 58) -- The Racine Zoo is welcoming some new residents to their renovated mountain exhibit.
Staff says Helga and Mantis- two female Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep- arrived at the Racine Zoo in February, and on Tuesday, May 12, Mantis delivered a baby.
Bighorn sheep are native to alpine grasslands of Western North America, according to the zoo. They say hunting, habitat loss, and disease from domesticated animals have caused numbers to decline over the years, but they're currently considered "stable."
Males can grow to weigh as much as 315 pounds, while females typically weigh between 150-200 pounds.
Staff members say they're looking for help naming the newest arrival; you can check out the Racine Zoo's Facebook page to vote for your favorite name.
