Sheboygan Falls sanctuary at risk of closing because of rising insurance costs

SHEBOYGAN FALLS, Wis. (CBS 58) -- Animal sanctuaries play a vital part in protecting wildlife and other animals across the nation.

In Sheboygan Falls, the Lakeshore Avian and Reptile Rescue and Sanctuary specializes in protecting reptiles and birds, but because of rising costs, it may have to close its doors.

The sounds of birds chirping and talking is like music to the ears for Heather Pekrul.

“It is a little loud in here,” said Pekrul. “It’s pretty much always, like if you can believe they’re actually pretty quiet right now.”

The founder of Lakeshore Avian and Reptile Rescue and Sanctuary, or LARRS for short, has spent over a decade taking in and taking care of these animals.

“They’re just such characters. They have huge personalities. They’re always doing tricks. They’re always making me laugh,” said Pekrul.

Reptiles are often surrendered to Pekrul, but she says because of rising insurance costs, the place these animals call home may be at risk.

“Year-and-a-half ago, when we had our insurance policy, it was around $3,200. And now it’s in excess of $6,500,” said Pekrul.

Pekrul’s insurance policy covers the building and liability costs, but she’s not sure how much longer she can continue to foot the bill.

“I am paying for almost everything out of my own pocket. I have completely used up my savings to try to make sure this place survives,” said Pekrul.

If the doors close, Pekrul says many of these animals will have to be moved to the limited number of bird and reptile sanctuaries across the state.

“It’s gonna put a burden on other rescuers if we have to transfer a lot of these animals out,” said Pekrul.

Pekrul says she’s hoping for community support so that these animals can continue to call this place home.

“That is what’s gonna help. That is what’s gonna keep us going,” said Pekrul.
