MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Construction on dozens of small homes to help put shelter over veterans' heads in Milwaukee is underway.

Veterans Community Project (VCP) of Milwaukee aims to help homeless veterans with a small village of transitional housing.

Forty tiny homes, about 240-square feet each, will serve as a place to stay safe while veterans can get into more permanent housing.

Along with shelter, the village will have a central hub with case managers.

State Senator Patrick Testin supports the project and says it can be essential for veterans struggling with addiction and mental health.

"It can be very difficult to navigate some of these bureaucratic programs, and the wraparound services that VCP provides really gets veterans back on their feet to become productive members of society," said

The project costs about $11.7 million but has several community partners as well as $2.5 million from the state of Wisconsin.

One of these community partners is the Milwaukee Brewers Foundation, the charitable arm of the Crew.

The executive director spoke at the podium, and she grabbed her umbrella, which features the late Bob Uecker.

"Bob was very much interested in respecting veterans, so I thought I would bring it out and make sure that he had an opportunity to be a part of this today," said

Other partners include Milwaukee Tool and We Energies. VCP hopes to finish the project by the end of 2026.

They are still taking donations to finish paying for the site. For more information, click here
