MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- The Milwaukee Police Department (MPD) released dash camera video showing the moments leading up to the fatal shooting of Elijah Wilks.

Wilks was shot Oct 9 by an officer, who was off duty at the time, near 49th and Mill.

Police Chief Jeffrey Norman said the off-duty officer was on his way to work and was involved in a minor vehicle accident with another person.

An altercation ensued, according to police, and the officer was reportedly hit in the face with a gun by the other driver, resulting in an exchange of gunfire in which the police officer fatally shot the man.

Dashcam video from the officer's vehicle shows the incident unfold. In it, Wilks is seen driving in the right lane on Mill Road when he drifts into the left lane and cuts the officer off -- causing a slight collision.

They both pull over and both men are seen walking in front of the officer's vehicle. That's when Wilks is seen pulling out a gun and hitting the officer across the face.

Wilks' family held a news conference following the shooting and said after reviewing the video, the shooting was justified.
