VILLAGE OF MERTON, Wis. (CBS 58) -- Police say they have located both the vehicle and the driver involved in the hit-and-run that injured a 64-year-old man and a 64-year-old woman before 9 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 2.

The suspect is a 33-year-old man who turned himself in and is currently in custody, said law enforcement.

Public assistance no longer need and the investigation is still ongoing.

VILLAGE OF MERTON, Wis. (CBS 58) -- Two pedestrians were seriously injured in a hit-and-run crash Tuesday, Dec. 2, in the Village of Merton, according to the Waukesha County Sheriff's Office.

A blue sedan traveling northbound on Main Street struck a 64-year-old man and a 64-year-old woman at approximately 8:44 p.m. near Huntington and Waukesha VV, police said. The driver then reportedly fled the scene.

Both victims were taken to local hospitals for treatment.

Jackie Malinowski, owner of Key Pieces, says she was hosting a ladies night event inside her store when the crash happened.

“With the big storefront windows, everything was flashing, sirens were going, people were running around outside,” Malinowski said. She added that in more than a decade on Main Street, she has never seen an incident like this. “Shocking. The store’s been here for 11-and-a-half years, and we’ve never had an incident like this.”

Malinowski says speeding has long been a concern on the road.

"They drive way too fast down this main street,” she said.

At KJ’s Watering Hole, an employee who did not want to be identified says he had crossed the road just minutes before the two pedestrians were hit.

“I was across the street in the other bar. I literally just walked across the street before them,” he said.

He has lived in Merton for more than 18 years and says poor snow removal is an issue. Snow piles and narrows the lanes.

“It makes it tougher for people because of the width of the road. Pushing cars out further, there isn’t really two lanes in that road,” he said.

The employee says he has known the two victims for over 15 years. He believes more police enforcement is needed along this stretch of Main Street.

The Waukesha County Sheriff's Office is asking anyone with information to contact Detective Samuel Yanke at (262) 896-8117 or by e-mailing [email protected].
