Wisconsin tree farm owners hope you'll buy live Christmas trees as tariffs could increase price of artificial ones
CBS 58 GREENDALE, Wis. (CBS 58) -- Many families the day after Thanksgiving start putting up their Christmas trees or do a little shopping. But if you're shopping for a Christmas tree, it may end up costing you more this year.
Due to an executive order signed by President Donald Trump, the price of artificial trees could increase by 10-30% because of tariffs.
At Jolly Nelson's trees in Greendale, they've been busier than normal on their first day of the season.
Owner Randal Counard said Friday's rush was "really crazy" because more people came on Friday instead of Saturday, ahead of the snowstorm, "I had to have a couple extra people come today because it was just slammed nonstop."
Greg Hann, of Hann’s Christmas Farm & President-elect of Wisconsin Christmas Tree Association, says his business sells an average of 6,000 trees a year.
He added that, "84% of wholesale customers say they’ve kept their prices the same for 2025 over 2024." Artificial trees, according to Hann, have grown in popularity over the last 20 years. But this year, what's growing is their price, due to Trump's 10-30% tariffs on imports from Asia.
"The nice thing about real trees is there aren’t any tariffs on Canadian or U.S. trees, so we never have that. There’s so many positives because of the local sales of economy coming around live trees," he said.
Supporting the local economy is one of the reasons that Katlyn and Kyle Naber buy live trees.
"We always love a real Christmas tree! The smell ... I think it’s just more nostalgic of Christmas than an artificial tree," said Katlyn. Kyle added, "something about being here in the community, getting a live, real tree, interacting with everybody."
Whether it's at a farm or a lot, you can pick your perfect tree, and family memories: "it’s nice to start the holiday season with a warm and heartfelt way, that’s what Christmas is supposed to be," shared Hann.
Jolly Nelson’s Trees in Greendale is open every day of the week until December 18th, or until their trees run out.
