MILWAUKEE (CBS 58)--Even though November 10th marks the 50th anniversary of the infamous sinking of the cargo ship the Edmund Fitzgerald on Lake Superior, you can still a special exhibition paying tribute to this indelible occasion at the Grohmann Museum on campus of MSOE. It's called "The Legend Lives On-50 Years Later."
Obviously, we all know how the fateful story ends. But you probably don't realize the ship's rich history and its ties to the Milwaukee area. Did you know the SS Edmund Fitzgerald was the largest ship launched at its time and was a record-setting vessel having moved 40 billion pounds of iron ore over its 17-year life starting in the late 1950s. It was also commissioned by Northwest Mutual Life Insurance Company and named after the president and chairman of the board. You can learn all this, look at historic photos and paintings, and even see a model of the ship along with its blueprints. For all the details about this special exhibit, just click here.
