MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- One movie has everyone playing dress up, even on skates.

"I just got really nostalgic with it, and I'm embracing the Barbie," Shorewood resident Karen Owecki said about her "workout Barbie" outfit.

"This is my original leotard from -- we won't even say what year. When I first walked in, people were taking my picture. I'm not embarrassed. I'm just embracing Barbie."

Owecki was not the only person who dressed as the doll for Friday's Summer Spinz event at Red Arrow Park dozens came out to enjoy skating at the community rink.

"I wanted to come here because I never roller skates, but it looks fun, and I also came here for the Barbie thing," 9-year-old Gigi Deal said. "It's pretty cool. I just love Barbie; I have dolls of Barbie."

There were 100 free skates available on a first-come-first-serve basis.

"I'm loving everything Milwaukee offers, including things like this," Owecki said.

There was food, music, skating lessons and real life Barbies to snap pictures with.

CBS 58 reporter Stephanie Rodriguez asked 8-year-old Lela Lovelee why she came to the event, and her answer was simple.

"Because I'm a Barbie Girl," Lovelee said.

Owecki, who saw the movie during an early-access screening, said the film is deserving of the hype its gotten with events like Summer Spinz.

"It's really about embracing females. Females can do anything they want," she said.

For some, the movie gave them a new role model.

"My favorite Barbie in the Barbie movie is the 'Journalist Barbie,'" Deal said.

Summer Spinz is a new event series presented by Roll Train MKE. The next event is Friday, Aug. 18, 5 to 9 p.m. at Red Arrow Park.
