WAUKESHA, Wis. (CBS 58) — The Waukesha County District Attorney's Office has determined that a Waukesha police officer was justified in shooting an armed man inside a Meijer store in July.

The shooting happened July 30 at the Meijer on East Sunset Drive after police were called around 6 p.m. for a report of a man armed with a knife.

According to Waukesha police, the district attorney's office has completed its review of the officer-involved shooting investigation and provided its findings to the agencies involved.

"For all of these reasons, I conclude the use of deadly force by the Officer was warranted in order to protect the victim, himself, other officers, and innocent citizens," the district attorney wrote in the closing paragraph of the review. "Therefore, there is absolutely no basis to prosecute the Officer."

Police said the full investigative file is not being released at this time because a related criminal case remains pending in court.

The department said releasing investigative materials while that case is ongoing could compromise the judicial process, affect future proceedings and make it more difficult to seat an impartial jury.

Waukesha police said they are working with the district attorney's office and Greenfield Police Department, which led the independent investigation, to determine when additional records can be released.

The department said it will continue evaluating its disclosure obligations as the court case moves forward.

The shooting

Police were called to the Meijer on July 30 for a report of a man armed with a knife.

Officers established phone contact with the suspect before responding officers were directed to his location inside the store.

Police said officers found the suspect holding a knife near a 59-year-old man.

Officers repeatedly ordered the suspect to drop the knife. Police said one officer then fired his weapon because of the suspect's actions and what authorities described as an immediate threat to the victim and responding officers.

Officers immediately began providing medical care to the suspect, who was taken to a hospital in critical condition.

The 59-year-old victim was treated at the scene for non-life-threatening injuries before also being taken to a hospital.

Police recovered a knife they believed was used during the incident.

The officer who fired his weapon was identified at the time as a 26-year-old man with five years of law enforcement experience. He was placed on administrative leave following the shooting in accordance with department policy.

The shooting was captured on officers' body-worn cameras, according to police.

The Milwaukee Area Investigative Team conducted the independent investigation, with the Greenfield Police Department serving as the lead agency.

The Meijer store reopened the following morning.
