'It’s hard to say goodbye': Family of Concordia student demands justice for 26-year-old killed
MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Family and friends said their final goodbyes to 26-year-old Ariel Spillner at her funeral on Monday.
“I loved her beyond words and it’s hard to say goodbye to her,” said Courtney Spillner, Ariel Spillner’s sister.
It was a somber day for Ariel's loved ones as they remembered the young woman they say was the biggest supporter to all she loved.
"There aren’t enough words to describe her," said Spillner. "She was beautiful, kind, loving, she would be there for you in a heartbeat if you needed anything, a shoulder to cry on. She was that person for everybody.”
Ariel was a student at Concordia University studying to be a pharmacist, a career that embodied her passion of helping people.
"She impacted so many more lives than she even realized and they are all here to love her, support her and share her story as well.”
Spillner says she and her sister were inseparable and now her only sister has been taken from her.
“I don’t think the charges are adequate," said Spillner. "They are not sufficient enough for the extremes that we believe had happened. She needs justice. This isn’t fair to her. You can see how loved she was, all the potential she had to help her community, with going to be a pharmacist, and it’s just sad that her life was taken.”
Police say Jamica Mills, Ariel's friend, shot and killed her after becoming paranoid while smoking marijuana together. Now, Mills is facing a first-degree reckless homicide charge, something Spillner says is not enough.
Spillner says she wants to see additional charges and wants Mills to be given the maximum sentence.
“We do not want them getting out. They are a danger to society," said Spillner. "If they did this to a friend, who knows what they are going to do to anyone else.”
Mills' bond is set at $150,000. She is expected to be back in court next week.
