Complaint: Man charged in pursuit that killed 3 admitted to 'guiding' driver during chase

MCSO

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Nineteen-year-old Trevon Loston has been charged in the fatal police chase and crash that killed three people Tuesday, Sept. 16, near 35th and Vilet.

He's charged with bail jumping, driving a vehicle without the owner's consent and possession of a firearm.

According to the criminal complaint, law enforcement officers attempted to stop a 2017 white Dodge Journey with no plates that was speeding east at the intersection of W. Center St. and N. Sherman Blvd. Police activated their lights, but the vehicle did not pull over and a chase ensued.

The chase came to an end when the Dodge ran a red light near 35th and Vilet and struck a 2006 Mazda Sedan with five people in it. Three people in the Mazda were killed, and two others seriously injured.

Prosecutors say three people were inside the Dodge Journey at the time of the crash, including Loston. Officers approached the Dodge and a woman climbed out of the passenger's seat, according to the complaint. She was taken into custody after police say she admitted to being the driver. Police also found Loston unconscious inside the car, gripping a black handgun.

The third occupant, who investigators say was in the rear driver's seat, told police Loston was driving the vehicle until 10 minutes before the crash.

She reportedly stated that Loston and the woman switched seats before the chase, and that while fleeing from police, Loston told the driver to "drive" and "don't stop" while holding the gun in his hand and pointing in the driver's direction.

Police found the Dodge was stolen from a residence in Elkhart, Indiana on Sept. 11 and said the key fob to the vehicle was in Loston's pocket.

According to the complaint, Loston has previous charges in Indiana after he fled from police in a stolen Honda CRV.

Loston told investigators he didn't steal the Dodge Journey, according to the complaint, but admitted to knowing it was stolen. He stated that he got a text from the driver to pick her up and to get her some liquor. After picking up the woman and the third occupant, he said he got tired of driving and switched places with her.

Prosecutors say Loston also admitted that when the pursuit began, he was "guiding" the woman on how to drive during a chase.
