PORT WASHINGTON, Wis. (CBS 58) -- On Saturday, Nov. 1, nearly 12% of Wisconsinites could be affected as SNAP benefits pause amid the government shutdown.

That's why a Port Washington family is stepping in to help, proving the power of community.

Sitting on N. Benjamin Street behind the Dollar General is a neutral-colored box with a circular wooden sign attached on top -- and it's what Megan Newhauser calls their "Blessing Box."

"This is available in our community 24/7. Take what you need, leave what you can," Newhauser said. "Just so they can have access around the clock."

Inside, the shelves are stocked full of items for all ages, including canned fruits and vegetables, rice, protein powders, baby wipes and diapers, candy, and more.

"We know food pantries are going to be inundated," Newhauser said. "This is available."

The family set up the box on Monday.

In just two days, it's already been used, and even refilled.

"The first morning there was baby wipes missing, and I think as a parent, knowing that someone came for their kids and used it for their kids is the most inspirational thing, because that's what it's there for," Newhauser said. "But somebody actually stocked it today, randomly, which was amazing."

If you want to donate, make sure items aren't expired or won't freeze.

The family said they're working on ways to adapt the box so it can stay out in rain, shine, and snow.

"We're here for you; we're here for each other," Newhauser said. "Binding together and building that community, especially when we need it the most, and right now, people are needing it."
