TICHIGAN, Wis. (CBS 58) -- The Tichigan Fire Department responded to a call Wednesday, Dec. 25 from a Town of Waterford resident reporting that seven deer had fallen through the ice on a local river.

The call was received at around 9:07 a.m., and the caller reportedly said that while four of the deer managed to free themselves, three remained in the water and were struggling.

When firefighters arrived, two additional deer had escaped, leaving one still trapped. Two firefighters in cold water rescue suits reached the remaining deer, secured it with a rope and pulled it to safety.

The young deer, described as exhausted, was dried off by EMS personnel and stood for about 30 minutes before walking into the woods.

The fire department reminded residents that ice conditions can be deceptive and encouraged calling for professional help during emergencies.
