MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- It's National Public Works Week and in Milwaukee, local leaders put on their construction vests and celebrated the city's workers.
Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley, alongside others, highlighted the work being done on Milwaukee's highways and infrastructure, which often goes unnoticed.
Crowley says these employees are the first line of defense in emergency situations and thanked them for making Milwaukee a safer place.
"Your work helps to strengthen our neighborhoods, supports our small businesses and improve the spaces for our residents every day, so as a county I want to say we are extremely proud to have these workers and continue to invest in public works," said Crowley.
The third week of May has been recognized as National Public Works Week since the 1960s.
