Family holding onto hope as 4-year-old hospitalized with severe pneumonia
Popp family MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) - Four-year-old Maverick Popp remains in the hospital with severe pneumonia. His parents have stayed by his side as they wait for answers.
Maverick loves wrestling, flag football, and cheering on the Green Bay Packers. Last week, he developed a fever and complained of stomach pain. His parents took him to the emergency room, expecting a minor illness.
Instead, doctors admitted Maverick for further observation.
Kaylee Popp said, “They found the pneumonia in his lung and it just kind of spiraled from there.”
Doctors attempted to drain fluid from Maverick’s lungs. His lung collapsed and he was intubated and sedated.
Kaylee said doctors were struck by how severe the pneumonia was.
She said, “They said this is one of the most impressive pneumonias they’ve ever seen.”
Doctors do not know how long Maverick will remain intubated, but his parents say he continues to show strength.
Maverick’s sisters, Brynlee and Brooklyn, talk and think about him every day.
Both of Maverick’s parents took FMLA to stay with him around the clock. His dad, Parker, is a Milwaukee police officer, and his mom, Kaylee, is a nurse practitioner.
Kaylee said, “We have important jobs and when we’re at work, we need to have a clear head, and there’s no way we can have a clear head while he’s here.”
A former coworker set up a GoFundMe to help cover expenses. Kaylee says she did not ask for financial support but appreciates the help as medical costs continue to grow.
She said, “Different things like breathing treatments and inhalers and steroids, and some of those aren’t covered by insurance.”
As doctors continue to monitor Maverick’s condition, his parents say their focus remains on getting him home.
Kaylee said, “We want every kid to get healthy and go home, and we want Maverick to come home real bad.”
