Hundreds of volunteers place flags at veteran graves inside Forest Home Cemetery ahead of Memorial Day in Milwaukee
CBS 58 MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Although Memorial Day isn't for another week, hundreds of volunteers packed inside of Forest Home Cemetery on Saturday morning to prepare for the holiday.
The goal was to place flags at the graves of each veteran buried on site.
"Actually, I wasn't expecting so many people so it's great, I think it's great," said volunteer Dwane Klostermann, who is a veteran himself. "It's great to come out and help to memorialize some of the veterans laid to rest at the cemetery."
For others, like New Berlin Eisenhower senior Anthony Blochowiak who used the day as part of his National Honor Society project, it was a chance to give back.
"It's just really important to honor the dead especially those who have served," Blochowiak said. "My big takeaway is that you can always make an impact. I made this out of nothing, I just came up and asked what I could do to help and you can always do that yourself."
On Memorial Day, the cemetery will host a family-friendly event beginning at 11 a.m. with a memorial service followed by a wreath laying.
While the event is free, officials are asking for reservations. For more information, click here.
