Pothole service requests in Milwaukee are at an all-time record high, DPW officials say

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- If you drive, bike, or even walk around Milwaukee, you've probably encountered potholes.

While the severe weather we've been having isn't helping -- and in some cases even contributing to more of them -- city officials said they've received a record number of pothole service requests.

According to the Department of Public Works, they currently have nearly 11,000 service requests, which is more service requests at this time than they've ever had in any year on record.

Jerrel Kruschke, DPW's commissioner, said they have staff working 12-hour shifts on weekdays, and they're even coming in on Saturdays to try and fix the areas in need.

Kruschke added that staff members from other DPW departments, like sanitation and sewers, are also volunteering to come in and help enhance crews -- and so far, this year alone, they've already filled thousands of the potholes. But there's still a long way to go.

Because of the request overload, DPW is prioritizing two types of potholes, with the first being those that are deep.

"[The other is] on high volume, high traffic streets, so major arterials. Two reasons to do that -- that is the one more likely to be impacting more residents, right, especially those driving and biking, as we've already talked about, and two, that allows us to be very efficient with our crews and grouping those requests and marching in order," Kruschke said during a Common Council meeting Wednesday morning.

Officials said the response time to those potholes is currently about a week.

For those that are minor, the response time is doubled to about two weeks, and for potholes on residential streets, there currently is no timeframe.
